Nairobi, April 29, 2026 – The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has given fresh hope to thousands of teacher interns after confirming plans to transition them into permanent and pensionable employment once the required budgetary provisions are secured.
In a statement issued on 29 April 2026, TSC said the move follows a court judgment delivered on 27 February 2026, which paved the way for the absorption of intern teachers serving under the Teacher Internship Programme.
The Commission noted that the internship programme, introduced in 2019, was part of the government’s broader agenda to promote youth employment and equip newly qualified teachers with hands-on classroom experience. Over the years, the programme has played a critical role in enhancing professional skills and improving teachers’ competitiveness in the job market.
According to TSC, the planned employment will cover 44,000 teacher interns, who are expected to be absorbed on permanent and pensionable terms once Parliament allocates the necessary funds. The Commission emphasized that the initiative is aimed at safeguarding the welfare of interns while strengthening curriculum implementation across public schools.
“TSC reaffirms its commitment to safeguarding the welfare of teachers, improving terms and conditions of service, and promoting industrial harmony in the public teaching service,” the statement reads in part.
However, the Commission appealed for patience from intern teachers, noting that the government requires adequate time to mobilize resources to support the transition. It assured stakeholders that efforts are actively underway to secure the required budgetary support.
TSC also commended teachers nationwide for their dedication and resilience, especially as the second term of the 2026 academic calendar begins. The Commission pledged continued diligence in serving educators and learners across the country.
If implemented, the move is expected to bring much-needed job security to thousands of intern teachers and ease staffing challenges in public schools.
