April 25, 2026-Nairobi. Kenya has taken a major step toward inclusive education and digital empowerment after stakeholders previewed the upcoming AI for Disability Project during a media tour at the Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE) in Kasarani.

The tour, held ahead of the official launch, brought together government officials, technology partners, and innovators working to use Artificial Intelligence (AI) and ICT to improve opportunities for persons living with disabilities.

Journalists were given behind-the-scenes access to KISE, where they explored assistive technologies, digital learning tools, and innovative solutions designed to break barriers in education, employment, and entrepreneurship.

The initiative comes at a critical time, with only about 1% of adults with disabilities in Kenya currently employed. This highlights the urgent need for scalable solutions that can expand access to jobs and economic participation.

Speaking during the event, officials from the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy emphasized the importance of inclusive innovation.

“Artificial Intelligence must be inclusive by design. This initiative demonstrates how Kenya can harness innovation to unlock opportunity and dignity for persons with disabilities.”

Representatives from KISE noted that access to adaptive tools and digital skills has the potential to transform the lives of learners and young people with disabilities.

The project brings together several partners, including Huawei, Qhala, and Assistive Technologies for Disability Trust (AT4D), all working to develop practical and locally relevant AI solutions.

Huawei representatives reaffirmed their commitment to inclusive digital transformation, noting that strong partnerships are key to ensuring technology benefits everyone.

The media tour also highlighted real-life impact stories from innovators and beneficiaries whose lives are expected to improve through digital inclusion.

The Kenya AI for Disability Project will be officially launched during the Connected Africa Summit, scheduled to take place from April 27 to 30 at The Edge Convention Center.
